As with any structure, the conditions of a shipping container change throughout its lifecycle. These cargo containers can spend years traveling ocean shipping lanes and will see wear and tear naturally. While there is not a universal grading system for the condition of shipping containers, companies like A American Container, use a scale to grade the integrity of new (“one-trip”) and used shipping containers.

Is it One-trip, CW, A, B, or C grade? What’s the difference? Here we further explain how our grading system works…

Structure and Aesthetic

When grading storage containers, there are two main factors – structure and aesthetics – each being independent of one another. For example, a container that is structurally sound for shipping purposes may not be aesthetically appealing due to rust, or dings & dents. At A American our scale includes One-trip, CW, A, B, and C grades and is based on the following criteria

One-Trips-Grade Shipping Containers

One-Trip-grade shipping containers at A American are our newest fleet and rate highest in both structure and aesthetics. Think of these as one of our ‘best’ options for your storage need

When you purchase a One TripGrade container from us, you can expect:

  • new container that is in excellent condition
  • The container can be fitted with our secure locking system

CWGrade Shipping Containers

At A American our CW Grade containers are some of the most popular steel cargo containers to purchase. They are considered “cargo worthy” which means the condition is deemed suitable for cargo transportation under CSC criteria, so they are a great option to store your stuff.

Most of our CW-grade containers meet the following criteria:

  • The container is used but still certifiable condition.
  • The container is wind and water tight.
  • Interior has scratches and minor surface rust.
  • The floor may be stained, marked, or slightly worn.
  • The exterior may have minor rust corrosion or dents.
  • The container may have been through a series of minor repairs.

These are cheaper to purchase than our OneTrip Grade containers, and still offer great quality storage solutions. They are our ‘better’ option and are an affordable purchase option. Call A American Container to learn more about this option for reliable onsite storage

A-Grade Shipping Containers

Our A –Grade containers are also some of the most popular steel cargo containers to purchase. If you do not need a certified container, then A-Grade is your best choice. A American Container uses A-Grade containers in our rental fleet.

Most of our A-grade containers meet the following criteria:

  • The container is used but still in certifiable condition.
  • Interior is a minimum of 50% mark free and likely has scratches and minor surface rust.
  • The floor may be stained, marked, or slightly worn.
  • The exterior may have minor rust corrosion or dents.
  • The container may have been through a series of minor repairs.

B-Grade Shipping Containers

Our B -Grade containers usually rate lower on aesthetics, but are still structurally sound for your storage. We consider them our ‘good’ option and they are the most affordable purchase we have available.

Most of our B-grade containers meet the following criteria:

  • The container is wind and water tight.
  • The solid floor and roofs with some patchwork
  • The exterior may have minor rust corrosion or dents.
  • The container may have been through a series of minor repairs.

C-Grade Shipping Containers

Our C-grade containers usually rate lower on aesthetics, but are still structurally sound for your storageWe consider them our ‘good’ option and they are the most affordable purchase we have available.

That said, since they aren’t much cheaper than our B-Grade units, most clients tend to choose that level when unsure of which to go with. Of course, we want to fit the best fit for your needs so this grade could very well be a good option for you.

With C-grade containers, you can expect:

  • The container will show obvious wear and tear. Noticeable markings, corrosion, and scratches may be present.
  • The floor is likely marked and may also have moderate delamination.
  • The container has likely been through several previous repairs.
